Amy Stell

I am running the London Marathon 2023 as part of the team for Headway Surrey. This is the first marathon I have ever run and I am privileged to be able to do it whilst fundraising for such an important charity.

Headway supports the families and survivors of those who have suffered brain injuries and trauma. They aim to not only provide this much needed support, but also to raise awareness of its consequences, and to promote improved care and assessment as well as campaign to reduce the incidence of brain injuries.

I would very much appreciate any support you can offer, no matter how big or small it may be. The next 5 months are going to be an intense training period to get back up to the fitness level needed for this race, and I will continue to post updates throughout my training. If you would like to follow it more closely then follow my instagram account:  @amys_marathon

In May 2022, while out on a run, I was hit by a car resulting in a fractured skull and multiple bleeds on my brain. The ongoing recovery process has been difficult, tiring and frustrating.

However, Headway Surrey have been fantastic in helping me to understand what to expect, coping strategies, and coming to terms with the accident and its difficult consequences.

In April, I will be running the London Marathon to raise money for Headway Surrey in thanks for the support they have given me. This will be an immense challenge and any donations would be much appreciated :) x

The charity:

Our aim is to enable adults in Surrey to live well with their acquired brain injury, to be independent and to support their families. To do this we offer a range of services to help with memory, information processing, decision making, managing fatigue, understanding the brain and cognition, emotional and behavioural changes. We provide peer support opportunities and social groups to enable independence and motivation to achieve their best. We support as many people as we can back into employment or volunteering. "You are my lifeline!"

Ahsan Khan

Did you know that one in 3 adults in the UK will suffer a brain injury in their lifetime?

A brain injury can be acquired or traumatic, it can be from a stroke, road accident, sports injury, trips, fall, encephalitis, hypoxia, tumour, bleed to the brain, an aneurysm, meningitis and other incidents.

Headway Surrey supports adults in Surrey with brain injuries and help their families too. They have been providing a range of specialist services both face to face and online since 1985 from their base in Guildford. As a charity, they need to raise £250,000 each year to support their clients. On average they support 60 people each week with a variety of 1:1, group sessions, counselling, social drop-ins, a helpline and family/carers survival toolkit courses.

Please help me raise the funds that are required for this fantastic and essential work.

Thank you,

Ahsan
