Having been involved with Headway Surrey since 2008, I joined the Council of Management in 2013 and became Chair in the same year. It is an honour to serve such a great organisation with my fellow Trustees, particularly at a time when ongoing funding has become more challenging.
I am passionate about bringing those that can provide support together with those that really need the benefits that these can bring. Being involved in the Guildford business community has allowed me to communicate the hard work of the team at Headway Surrey to influencers around Surrey who can help us with our vital cause. Brain injury and its effects on the individual and their families are usually dramatic. Ensuring that the message of the support offered by Headway Surrey is kept at the forefront of charitable opportunities remains important.
By profession, I am a director of a Chartered Financial Planning company in central Guildford.
I moved to Guildford in 1979 and maintain additional roles as director of Experience Guildford and Vice-Chair of the Southern Committee of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI).
Helen Goatley is a solicitor and the Chairman of Barlow Robbins LLP in Guildford, Surrey. Helen has been on the SRA Clinical Negligence panel since its inception and is an APIL Fellow and accredited brain injury specialist.
Helen does her own advocacy at inquests and acts as a Court of Protection Deputy for a number of clients.
Helen’s work has brought her into contact with a wide network of people in the healthcare sector. She is well known amongst local schools, rehabilitation centres and charities. She is a member of the board of trustees of Headway Surrey and chair of the Surrey Acquired Brain Injury Network.
Helen is "First-rate and vastly experienced" and is noted for her "real attention to clients." (Chambers UK 2016)
I was delighted to be invited to become a Trustee of Headway Surrey, and also the Treasurer of the charity, from 2015. I have lived in the Woking and Guildford area all my life and I am keen to be involved in our local community wherever possible. It is a pleasure to work with the dedicated team at Headway Surrey, which provides invaluable help and support to those affected by brain injury.
In terms of my professional background, I began my career with a large firm of accountants in London and have strong auditing and corporate finance experience. I then joined a blue-chip UK PLC and was involved in pre- and post-acquisition reviews in the Far East, America and Europe. Since then, I have worked in senior positions in wealth management for over 25 years and hold the titles of Chartered Wealth Manager and Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment.
I have been connected with Headway Surrey for just over twenty years, since the accident in which my son suffered a severe head injury and spent time in rehabilitation sessions at Headway House in Guildford.
In the exhausting, uncertain days which followed his discharge from hospital, Headway and its wonderful staff were there, not only to help Faisal with coming to practical terms with the effects of his injury but also with reassurance and support for the whole family in what was a profoundly challenging and destabilising time.
My role as a Trustee of Headway is therefore directly informed by my son's experience of living with the legacy of brain injury.
I was invited to become a trustee in 2015 and was delighted to accept. I have been actively involved in fund raising for other Charities such as Scope and British Heart Foundation for many years so it seemed to me the next logically progression.
After studying at University for my BSc, my back ground is in the construction industry with a career as a Chartered Surveyor for a number of large Practices in the UK before starting my own practice nearly 20 years ago.
In difficult financial times I see my role as Trustee with Headway as a real opportunity to promote the Charity and its fundraising activities.
Jonathan has over 25 years’ experience across youth, business support and public sectors, with a strong background in strategic management and partnership development.
He became a Trustee in May 2012 and worked at Woking Borough Council as the Project Lead on a youth employability programme. He was CEO of Surrey Connexions Partnership for over 8 years and between 1994 and 2001, he also served as CEO of two business support partnerships in South Derbyshire and West London respectively.
He is a member of the Surrey High Sherriff Youth Council as well as a Trustee of Adviza, the leading employment support charity in Thames Valley.
Jonathan is a keen football fan and follows the mighty red from Merseyside…Liverpool FC! His other major interest is in international relations, particularly on trade and development matters between the EU and emerging economies of Africa and the Asian sub–continent.
I was delighted to become a trustee of Headway Surrey back in 2014 having got to know the charity after my brother-in-law, Frazer, suffered a brain injury in a road traffic accident. Headway and all the fabulous staff in North Road have been fantastic with Frazer over the years. I have witnessed the results they achieve and I feel privileged to be a trustee.
I was born in Guildford and after a short spell working and living in London now work for myself as a Chartered Building Surveyor, based in Guildford and London.
